报告摘要:The importance of (new) knowledge for economic growth has long been established in theories of technological progress and innovation (Schumpeter, 1934; Solow, 1957). Firms consistently invest in the development of new innovative products and processes. The increasing complexity and expenditures of conducting inherently uncertain, research and development (R&D) activities induce firms to complement their internal R&D activities with external knowledge, stemming from a variety of partners, including universities and research centers (von Hippel, 1988; Chesbrough, 2003). This study focuses on interactions between science and industry. According to available theory and empirical evidence, firms engage in collaborations with academia in order to access complementary scientific capabilities. Collaborating with knowledge institutes can be instrumental in broadening the scope of activities, in reducing risk and in internalizing new (scientific) knowledge. While there is an extensive body of literature on industry-science interactions, few empirical studies are geared towards modelling and assessing performance effects of involving academics on the level of inventions.

In this paper we examine whether academic inventors contribute to the creation of new technology developments by firms, through the lens of corporate patents. We rely on the notion of absorptive capacity (Cohen & Levinthal, 1990) to advance a number of hypotheses whereby processes of knowledge recognition (identification), assimilation and exploitation are conceived as situated at the level of the learning dyad (Lane & Lubatkin, 1998; Lane, Koka, & Pathak, 2006).

Our findings strongly suggest that how expertise residing with academics relates to project and firm characteristics affects subsequent technological activity in a significant manner. Likewise, firms benefit more by involving company inventors in the development process. Variables reflecting a more reified conception of absorptive capacity do not add meaningfully to the explanatory power of our models. As such, our study contributes to the literature on absorptive capacity by clarifying how underlying processes can be conceived as ‘situated’ and by doing so, gain in terms of explanatory power
